In some cases, these pains can be felt in the calves or even the foot. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s quite possible that you have Sciatica, and it would definitely be recommended to seek medical attention. Causes of Sciatica

Causes of sciatica are varied, and unfortunately, in many cases, the cause of sciatic nerve pain cannot be identified. It is believed that the general wear and tear of the body may result in sciatica pain, which can be relieved with some form of sciatica treatment. Sciatica is an injury to or compression of the sciatic nerve.

Causes of Sciatica

Sciatic nerve pain starts when the main nerve into your leg, the sciatic nerve, is irritated, pinched, or compressed in some way. This can happen for one or more of several reasons; the following are the main causes of sciatica:causes-of-sciatica

  • Isthmic Spondylolisthesis – A stress fracture in the fifth lumbar vertebra, known as L5 can cause disc movement and hence sciatic symptoms.
  • Piriformis Syndrome – The Piriformis muscle is located in your lower back and can sometimes spasm, resulting in sciatica symptoms.
  • Degenerative Disc Disease – The discs in your spine will age just as you do and are prone to wear and tear like the rest of your body. Your discs are aging, and one of them has given way, hence pinching, irritating or putting pressure on your sciatic nerve.
  • Lumbar spinal stenosis – Different roots of your sciatic nerve pass through passageways in your spine. One of these passageways may get smaller, which causes pinching, irritation or putting pressure on the nerve.
  • Lumbar herniated disc – The discs in your spine were like shock absorbers, which allows your back to bend and move. The effects of aging can weaken or damage these discs which may result in a disc bulging out or even splitting, pinching or putting pressure on the sciatic nerve. This is one of the most common causes of sciatica pain.
  • Trauma – Accidents that causes sudden compression of the sciatic nerve can produce great pain, for example, breaking a bone that results in pressure on the nerve.
  • Tumors – This may irritate the sciatic nerve and produce sciatica; however, this is rarely attributed as one of the causes of sciatica.
  • Pregnancy – When you carry a baby there is extra strain on your spine, which can cause sciatic pain.

Sciatic Nerve Pain Treatment

If you suspect you are suffering from sciatic nerve pain, you should speak to your doctor right away.

You should have a thorough examination to find out the extent of your symptoms. It’s also common for the symptoms of Sciatica Nerve pain to be linked to other problems, so the pain may not necessarily be the cause. This is why you should be honest and thorough with your doctor when discussing all your symptoms. The doctor can then decide if the symptoms are directly related to Sciatica Nerve pain or if they are part of something else.

Fortunately, there are lots of treatment options, but it directly depends on your specific diagnosis. It is common for a doctor to start the patient off with physical therapy; this is more often the treatment if there is also a herniated disc. Other treatments may include prescriptions, typically to treat the pain or anti-inflammatory drugs to help with the discomfort. Typically doctors recommend taking these only as absolutely needed to avoid any negative side effects from the medications.

Symptoms of SciaticaIf sciatic nerve pain is severe enough to restrict your mobility, your doctor may prescribe an aggressive form of treatment, the first step in this treatment being steroid injections. The drugs help in reduction of pressure on the nerves, bringing down the inflammation. As we all know, steroids are dangerous if taken in high doses, thus by law you can only take three of these steroid injections per year. But this dosage is well enough to relieve the pain for a short duration and not for the whole year.

Sciatica surgery is something that may be considered for severe sciatic nerve pain, but it is important to see sciatica surgery only as a last resort. It should be reserved for only the most serious cases, where bowel or bladder control is lost, or the patient has no sensation in the back and where surgery is the only option left. Although patients do experience relief of sciatic nerve pain after surgery, there are often other complications that arise from doing the surgery which is serious enough only to consider surgery for the most severe cases of sciatica pain.

Sciatic nerve pain can be a serious condition that should be treated as soon as possible and not ignored. Initial symptoms might start as a loss of sensation in the legs and back, but if left untreated, further complications can arise.

Inflammation of the sciatic nerve can cause pain that can be immobilizing. There are several courses of treatment, and your doctor will usually recommend a course of action that is consistent with your symptoms and the progression of the disorder. Administering drugs to reduce the inflammation, chiropractics and acupuncture are just three of the possible courses of treatment to follow. You need to choose an option that best suits your condition.
